The MIAS Mountain Bike Leader Level 2 award is a great, internationally recognised qualification that entitles you to leader groups of mountain bikers on technical and open terrain (equivalent to red trails at a forestry trail centre) up to 600m elevation. It also qualifies you to teach the skills required to ride such a trail.
You will learn:
-
- Leadership and group management skills
- Route planning
- Navigation skills, including map reading and navigating with a compass
- Risk assessments and how to keep everyone safe
- Equipment to carry
- Access and conservation
- Trailside bike maintenance
- The riding skills required to ride these trails and coach them to others:
- Line choice
- Brake modulation and braking zones
- Cornering technique
- Front wheel lifts
- Rear wheel lifts
- Bunny hops
- Riding over obstacles
- Drop offs
- Downhill riding
- Uphill riding
We will teach the course over 2 days through a combination of classroom work and practical riding sessions.
Prerequisites: You need to be fit enough to ride 30km in one ride and either hold or be working towards a 1 day (8 hour) first aid certificate. We can help arrange a first aid course for you if you like.
The course fee includes your MIAS registration fee and log book. Once you have passed the course, you will be eligible to join the Associate of British Cycle Coaches, which includes insurance for guiding and coaching up to MIAS Level 2 standard.
